The modules below represent three of the four DODD Training Requirements for Direct Support
Professionals, outlined in rule 5123-2-08 in Appendix C, and must be completed within 30 days of being
hired.
As part of the DODD Training Requirement, you will also need to be trained on your agency’s policies
regarding the following topic: Provisions of rule 5123-17-02 of the Administrative Code relevant to the direct support professional’s duties including a review of health and welfare alerts issued by the department. Note that Health and Welfare Alerts are included in the Brittco Training module under the My Documents section. You may need to ask your supervisor to assign the required documents to you before you review them.
Module 1 - Person-Centered Planning and the Provision of Services (Learning time:

Module 2 - Facilitating Community Participation and Integration for Individuals

- Becoming independent
- Being personally responsible
- Becoming integrated into the community
- Responsibilities of the DSP
- Responsibilities of the support team
- Health and safety of the individual in the community
Module 3 - Empathy-Based Care (Learning time: 30 minutes*)
- What empathy is
- Empathy versus sympathy
- Empathic listening (also known as active listening)
- Common mistakes that negatively impact empathy
